Accurate diagnosis for preserving women’s health and life

At St. Luke’s Clinic, this procedure is performed by experienced specialists in conditions of absolute sterility, with the use of pain relief, which guarantees maximum comfort and safety for the patient.

Why is this important and when is a puncture prescribed?

Culdocentesis is most often used in emergency gynecology, when a woman is bothered by sharp, acute pain in the lower abdomen, and the doctor needs to immediately decide on the necessity of urgent surgery.

Main indications for puncture:

  1. Suspicion of ectopic pregnancy: If the tube has ruptured or the pregnancy has terminated, blood spills into the abdominal cavity. Puncture helps to detect this instantly.
  2. Ovarian or cyst apoplexy (rupture): Allows confirmation of internal bleeding.
  3. Purulent inflammatory processes: Suspicion of pelvioperitonitis, adnexal abscess, or rupture of an abscess. Analysis of the obtained fluid helps to accurately select an antibiotic.
  4. Accumulation of fluid of unclear origin: For taking a fluid sample for laboratory or cytological (oncological) examination.

Why is the puncture performed through the vagina?

The posterior vaginal fornix anatomically borders the lowest point of the abdominal cavity. If there is blood or pus in the abdomen, due to gravity, it flows precisely there. A puncture in this area is the shortest, least traumatic, and most informative path for the doctor. No incisions are made on the abdomen.

How is the procedure performed at St. Luke’s Clinic?

We understand your concerns, so we do everything to ensure the procedure is quick and imperceptible.

  • Anesthesia: The procedure is performed under local anesthesia or short intravenous medical sleep. You will not feel sharp pain.
  • Course of manipulation: The patient is in the gynecological chair. The doctor treats the vagina with an antiseptic and, using a special thin needle, makes a micropuncture of the posterior fornix, extracting the contents with a syringe.
  • Duration: The puncture itself takes only 1–2 minutes.
  • Result: The doctor immediately sees the nature of the fluid (clear, bloody, purulent) and instantly determines further tactics: whether emergency surgery (laparoscopy) is needed, or if conservative treatment is sufficient.

Recovery after puncture

The micropuncture of the vaginal mucosa heals on its own within a few hours and does not require sutures. If, according to the results of the puncture, surgery was not needed, the patient may feel slight discomfort in the lower abdomen, which quickly passes. After a short rest in the day hospital ward, you can go home.

Acute lower abdominal pain is an alarm signal. Don’t waste time! Seek urgent gynecological care from the professionals at St. Luke’s Clinic.
